I cannot wait for this trip! But of course before we go there are a few things to consider.
During this experience I want to take away the knowledge of what it is like to be immersed in a new culture and be culture shocked. I want to learn what it is like in Korea in every aspect, culture, language, food, education systems, social relationships, family experiences and everything possible. I want to know what it will be like for my future as a teacher and teaching English abroad. I hope to gain this personal experience to form a better me in the end. I believe that this trip will have some challenges, not only inside the classroom, but also outside. Inside the classroom I believe it could be tricky in fully engaging all of the students and be able to come up with a suitable lesson plan that the girls will appreciate. I don't believe that I will have a problem communicating with the girls since the group I am with is in the Business school, but the others might have a harder time connecting with the younger groups. On the other hand, outside of the class we might run into problems with adjusting to the sleeping schedule and the types of food we are eating, since we heard about the problem before... I'm personally a bit skeptic about getting lost in Korea so I plan to stick to people who have been to Korea before! I believe the top skills that we need to have as a student teacher is patience, acceptance, and confidence. We know that we are not teachers or have never even taught before, but this is a learning experience for both us and the students so the patience and acceptance with our mistakes and theirs will and should be welcomed. Also we need to keep in mind that we are welcomed guests from KU and that we are not only upholding American standards, but also KU's expectations as students traveling abroad. As a student I am an avid listener and a quick learner. I'm quieter, but that means I pay attention and catch things that some others miss. As a teacher, I haven't had too many professional experiences, but I have helped my mom teach my brothers as they grew up and heard her stories as a teacher as well. I hope to gain not only student experience, but also teacher and professional experience on this trip!
